"In the not too distant future, 2030s AD,
There was a man named Joel, not too different from you or me,
He worked at a satellite repair station, keeping old birds in operation,
He did a good job and he liked the place,
Until a missile blew it up and shot him into spa-ace."
Joel Sherman Roberts was born to a Canadian couple, a geothermal engineer and a journalist, and grew up on the outskirts of Reykjavik. While he grew up, his mother was often away on remote plants, so he was mostly raised by his father. While his parents were more focused on the Earth, especially as climate change became more serious, he turned his attention to the sky.
He liked building model rockets and playing space games in his free time, and had aimed to join one of the space agencies. After a long and challenging road in education, he finally got his chance, being accepted into the ESA as a technician and standby astronaut. He was launched surprisingly quickly in his career, being tasked to the CYCLOPS mission: a small space station used to repair, refuel, and replenish satellites currently in orbit, as a way to reduce space junk. Each mission lasted 180 days.
Joel was the 5th mission astronaut- each flight was solo- and he enjoyed his time in orbit. However, on day 141, an anti-satellite missile launched from Russia. It's intent was to destroy a defective spy satellite, but targeted CYCLOPS station instead. The resulting explosion tore the station apart, and Joel was blasted into space. He would have died if not for one of the short-lived flames swallowing him up- actually a red breach. Thanks to relative motion, he was not disintegrated upon entering the other side.

Extra Information
CYCLOPS
A small space station in Low Earth Orbit, able to maneuver to rendezvous with satellites. Based on the cheap Chinese Tiangong space station: http://www.ninfinger.org/models/vault2013/Shenzou%209%20-%20Tiangong%201/Shenzhou%209%20-%20Tiangong%201%20(i).jpg
The first CYCLOPS station was a resounding success, and plans were underway to launch a second. Astronauts were launched using Soyuz capsules.
