Alright, so however you got here, you've taken an interest in the Infinitas RP. Perhaps you've stumbled on the forums, or, more likely, you were referred here by a friend. The first step is to get on the IRC channels, where the magic happens! If you know how to use IRC, join iuturna.sorcery.net or any of the other sorcery.net servers. If you're new to this whole eye-are-cee thingamabob, the first thing I'd recommend is that you download mIRC from www.mirc.com and install it. Don't worry, it doesn't bite. IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. Basically, a bunch of servers make up a biiig mega-server that work together by relaying data to one another, hence the name. You can connect to any number of smaller servers that form a mega server, known as a network, but knowing the address of just one will do. When you start up IRC, it'll go through the registration stuff - just hit Continue until a gray options box pops up. This is the "Select server" menu. IRC hasn't connected to anything yet and is just waiting for you to tell it where to go. In the left hand side menu, click on "servers" if it's not already selected, and click "add". It will prompt you for four fields. Type something descriptive in the description box - I reccomend something like "SorceryNet Iuturna". Type in "iuturna.sorcery.net" in the "IRC server" box, and leave Ports the way it is. Leave Group and Password blank. Click "add". You should see your new entry at the bottom of the list. Click "select". In the new screen that comes up, type your preferred username (Be aware, SorceryNet's active, and some usernames may be already taken. If you get a message from NickServ informing you of this, use the command /nick (Whatyouwantyournewnametobehere) without the brackets to change your name.), and possibly an alternate if it's already taken. Then hit "connect". Phew! Bear with me, because we're almost done. In the new window that comes up, type #infinitasOOC in the box at the top and click "join". Welcome! You may also want to use "join channel" under "channel" up top and join #infinitas, which is where the RP happens (The OOC channel is for chattage and setting up of scenes) and possibly the #CoS, the Corner of Silence, a local hangout that most of the Infinitas players hang out at. Sadly, you can't start RPing yet. You need to have an approved character sheet, or CS, to play, which you'll need to fill out on this very forum. Head on over to the CS Submissions form, and check out the "CS sample, guide, and template" topic. If you want direct links to the code you need to put into your posts to make your CS look right, here's the links to them: The template for new CSes, intended for those new to the art of CS making can be found here. The template for established or more advanced CSes, intended for complex characters like shapeshifters or the more advanced users is here. It can take some time for approval. Be patient! It's worth the wait. If you have any troubles, shoot me a PM on the forums here or pop on the #infinitasOOC channel to ask for assistance. While you're waiting for the CS to be approved, have a link to our (admittedly highly incomplete) wiki: http://wiki.infinitasrp.com/ Also, to aid in the chances of your CS getting approved on the first try (Which is likely - don't worry, we're nice) here are some tips: 1. Characters that are completely bulletproof are not acceptable. Sorry. Seeing as Infinitas is a relatively technologically unsophisticated world, having a character be proof against small arms pretty much means he or she could wreck the island easily if they wanted to. Being bullet RESISTANT is fine, but enough small arms fire should eventually be able to take the character down. There aren't any tanks or IFVs on the island, too, so any characters designed to go up against them are not only going to be out of place but are going to be severely overpowered and very fun-spoling for the rest of us. 2. Characters that are explicitly designed just to top the most powerful characters on the island are not acceptable. Infinitas isn't a power fight. If you just want your character to be stronger than everyone else, remember: good RP doesn't usually come from characters fighting other characters. Also, if you make him too powerful, he'll be boring to play, both for you and for us. The current "high bar" seems to be Sebastian (The lynx version) and Chester. Remember, leave room for character growth! 3. Combat is not the main focus. I have one character that's never held a gun in her life and the other, who, while stubborn, is little more than a civvie with a pistol and target shooting experience. Both get equally as much RP as my two combat oriented characters, Daniel and Chester. Just because they aren't able to bullseye a quarter at 25 yards doesn't mean they aren't useful during plots, and it doesn't mean nobody will want to play with them. This isn't D&D, although we sometimes borrow it's elements - the focus definitely isn't on combat. The focus is on character development and growth, and just plain Fun. Bottom line: Your character doesn't have to be the protagonist in a spaghetti western. They'll get RP whether they're combat-capable or not. 4. Fun is the focus! If your character could screw things up and ruin fun for others, they may get approved, but they won't be too popular. Try to make characters that are fun to play and work with! This isn't to say that you can't make angsty, depressed bruisers, but that kind of character takes some experience to pull off properly and grow properly. 5. If you really can't think of much for your character, I'll approve it anyway. We have a policy of organic growth here. Your character starts up as an initial state and hopefully develops a personality and traits from there, on top of what they already had. Sandy, my second character, started out on a MUCK as little more than a name and a species. I imported her to Infinitas. In the time between, she's grown into one of my most natural-feeling characters. The point being, you should flesh out the character before you start, but if you _really_ can't come up with much, I'll let you scrape by anyway. As long as you have some sort of initial point for the character to go on, you should be good. And finally, and most importantly: 6. DON'T BE A DICK. I can't emphasise this one enough! Infinitas is all about fun and cooperation. We're very casual and relaxed here, and we'll gladly accept you as one of your own no matter what flaws you have or what your level of skill is. You don't need to be abusive, you don't need to take things as personal affronts. Separate your character and your CS from yourself. If we tell you you need to improve things, remember, we're honestly saying this to help you improve and improve the RP. Please don't take it as an insult, as hard as it may be not to. We approve things, generally, based on trust level. The more we trust you to do fun things instead of hogging the spotlight, the more you can get away with. Work with us! Good luck, and I hope you find entertainment among the RP denizens. Last Edited by Adreos On Nov 14, 2024 2:59 AM | |
